CDS Selected as Cybersecurity Innovation by Federal Government
The Federal Government of Canada’s Build in Canada Innovation Program (BCIP) recently selected StreamScan's CDS (Cyberthreat Detection System) technology as an innovative cybersecurity solution. This program selects Canadian technologies with high innovation potential and makes them available to government entities for evaluation. The selection process for the program is very rigorous and takes several months.
The primary objective of BCIP (recently renamed Innovative Solutions Canada or CIS) is to allow Canadian innovators to secure a first contract with the federal government.
StreamScan fits that description as one of the very first companies to apply AI to cyber threat detection. StreamScan’s CDS remains the only intrusion detection system developed in Quebec.
What has the Selection Meant for StreamScan?
After being selected by BCIP, the Communications Security Establishment (CSE) and Defence Canada showed great interest, and CDS is currently in the evaluation phase with both organizations. These two organizations are continually looking for advanced technologies to enhance government and National Defence computer systems.
About our Cyberthreat Detection System
The CDS is an AI-driven cybersecurity solution that provides 360-degree visibility on all devices. This visibility allows companies to have full security coverage for their networks. The platform detects computer intrusions, security breaches, and compromised machines in a system by analyzing network traffic.
Part of CDS’ power is its ability to detect known cyberthreats and unknown (or zero-day) threats using its AI capabilities. This means the CDS can overcome the shortcomings of traditional intrusion detection tools that detect attacks solely via known signatures. With the explosion of cyberattacks, these conventional security tools have reached their limits and can no longer effectively protect computer networks.
Signature-based Detection No Longer Effective
Each piece of malware or attack requires a new signature so security tools can detect it. But the volume of attacks has exploded (e.g. from 200,000 new malicious tools identified per day in 2013 to 3 million per day in 2019), and it’s no longer realistic to create a signature for each cyberthreat - making signature-based tools obsolete.
Zero-Day Detection - A Major Breakthrough
Unknown new cyberthreats, or zero-day threats, now account for nearly 20% of cyberthreats and are the most damaging as they remain undetected the longest. When they do occur, IT or security teams often struggle to remediate them because of their complexity. And, the more time organizations lose before reacting or understanding the situation, the greater the damage.
CDS’ ability to detect zero-day cyberthreats gives organizations a head start. These are the kinds of tools that are needed to deal with current and future cyberthreats.
Who is CDS For?
StreamScan's CDS technology is designed to protect critical and mission-critical IT infrastructures such as manufacturing, pharmaceutical, defence, and other industries. StreamScan also offers a Managed Detection and Response solution for SMBs looking for a solution to protect themselves effectively against hacking.
