A Collection of Datasets for Intrusion Detection in MIL-STD-1553 Platforms
MIL-STD-1553 is a standard military communications protocol that has been around for over forty years, and is essential to the operation of a wide range of defense platforms. At the time of its creation, the standard was designed focusing solely on reliability and fault tolerance, without regard to safety issues. However, it has been demonstrated in recent years that modern defense platforms are increasingly the target of cyber-attacks from both state and non-state actors. Against this backdrop, MIL-STD-1553 data buses are prime vectors for compromising the defense platforms that depend on them for communications.
As part of an R&D contract we won with the Royal Canadian Air Force, we explored a series of cyberattacks against MIL-STD-1553 data buses. We also generated a dataset by executing a series of attacks in a test-bed environment.
We are willing to share this unclassified MIL-STD-1553 dataset for academic or industrial research purposes. Contact us via this form.
These data sets could be used to design and evaluate intrusion detection systems for MIL-STD-153 avionics platforms.
