StreamScan's CDS, a cybersecurity innovation developed in Montreal

You have probably already heard about the CDS cyber threat detection technology developed by StreamScan. What is this technology used for? In what context should it be used?

In this blog post, we will explain this technology and its importance in securing computer networks.

StreamScan puts Quebec on the map of computer intrusion detection solutions (IDS/IPS)

The CDS (Cyber Threat Detection System) technology was developed in Montreal by a team of StreamScan researchers in collaboration with Canadian universities.

StreamScan was one of the very first companies in the world to apply AI to cyber threat detection.

360-degree network visibility is the key to effective cyber defense

CDS is a sophisticated cyber threat detection solution that provides 360-degree visibility into the security of an IT computer park, giving companies control over their network.

You can't protect against what you can't see. So 360-degree visibility into your network is critical to protecting yourself. That's what CDS provides.

Physical and virtual appliance

The CDS is available as a physical or virtual appliance. It connects to the network entrance (on the core-switch) and captures all traffic entering and leaving the network to analyze it.

Its objective: to detect and block malicious traffic and anomalies that are the sign of a cyber attack, as quickly as possible to avoid any impact.

The CDS detects, among other things: computer intrusions, ransomware and other malware (worms, etc.), data exfiltration attempts, malicious lateral movements, compromised devices in a network, etc. All this detection is done without any interaction with the network computers. Its use does not impact your network.

The detected cyber threats are automatically blocked to avoid any impact.

Detecting anomalies and suspicious behavior using AI

In addition to detecting known cyber threats, CDS focuses on detecting unknown (or zero-day) cyber attacks and malware using AI. This capability allows CDS to overcome the shortcomings of traditional intrusion detection tools that detect cyberattacks by their signatures alone. With the explosion of cyber attacks, these traditional security tools have reached their limits and can no longer protect computer networks.

Selected as an Innovation by the Federal Government of Canada

The innovative character of StreamScan's CDS has earned the right to be selected as an Innovation by the Canadian federal government through the CCIP program (Building Canada Innovation Program). This program aims to select Canadian technologies with high innovation potential and make them available to government entities for evaluation. The selection process of the CCIP (currently renamed Innovative Solutions Canada) is very rigorous and takes several months.

The outcome of the StreamScan CDS selection by the Federal Government

After being selected by the Federal Government of Canada, the Communications Security Establishment of Canada (CSE) and Defence Canada have shown great interest in StreamScan's CDS. These 2 entities are constantly looking for advanced technologies to help them enhance the security of their government and national defense IT assets. We have conducted 2 projects with these 2 entities (confidential projects).

Who is the CDS technology designed for?

StreamScan's CDS technology was designed to protect critical IT infrastructures such as manufacturing (IT and OT), pharmaceuticals, defense, etc. It is also intended for small and medium-sized businesses that are looking for a solution to effectively protect themselves against hacking.
