Verizon’s annual data breach report

Beware! Verizon recently released its much anticipated 2021 Data Breach Investigation Report. Nearly 30,000 cybersecurity incidents were investigated from 88 countries. And once again this year, the key finding is that human factor figures prominently in the causation of data breaches.

Statistics show that employees are the biggest risk factor a business faces. According to the report, 85% of the approximately 5,000 data breaches studied last year had a human element in their causation. Moreover, 60% of them involved personally identifiable information.

The report also points out that in North America, more and more of the breach victims are Small to Medium-sized Businesses. in 2019, the number of attacks targeted at small businesses was less than half of those at large organizations, in 2020, the numbers were much closer: 307 breaches at large organizations and 263 breaches at small organizations - so, almost half of all breaches.
